On going slaughter of voters’ right to maintain secrecy in the coming Legislative elections in the
Punjab has traversed all moral limits. Both Constitution of India and Election Commission necessitate the voters to keep their decision secret while balloting, but ongoing exit poll surveys are making this secrecy public.
Exit poll surveyors legally have no right to question on voters’ decision of exercising their fundamental right of franchising. It is a gross violation of the law of the nation.
A few days back, one news magazine named ‘Global Punjab’ carried out at New Delhi, claimed having a survey of more than one lac people of the Punjab and published its results favoring the reigning Congress party predicting 68 seats for Congress and 38 for SAD and its ally BJP.
Interestingly, when this dubious and doctored result resulted in a row, its editor backtracked taking a U-turn
From last few days, leafs of the two national dailies are frequently hit by HT-CNN-IBN, Star News and India TV survey results. These results are in the form of paid advertisements issued by either political parties or their pseudo partners.
HT-CNN-IBN survey predicted that the reigning Congress party would topple SAD+BJP alliance’s claim of ruling the Punjab for the next five years. According to this survey, Congress will lead by 5 % seats by SAD+BJP alliance. Star News’ survey endorsed the above claims by predicting 57 seats for Congress and 50 for SAD and BJP alliance
Volte-face to the above claims, India TV, anchored by Rajat Kapoor, Aap ki Adalat fame, predicted a landslide victory for SAD+BJP alliance winning 69-79 legislative seats out of the total 117. As per this survey, Congress will be able to win 32-42 seats only.
I, high and dry, wish to pose some questions to the ‘doctors’ of these exit poll results, that run as follows:
1. Around 70 % of the Punjab is living across 12500 plus villages, how these exit poll surveyors can cover all villages in 10-15 days?
2. This elephantine task is possible only with a team of at least 1000 surveyors. If they claim to hire so many people, then why we, the respondents are not aware about the conduct of these surveys?
3. Since these channels have their own cameramen and helping workforce, why these surveys had not been the live ones?
4. Since the survey group used by all the exit poll conductors is the same, why the results vary so notably?
Me judice, these pseudo surveyors have no answer to the above questions. One or the other political party sponsored and choreographed these surveys. Political parties have blown up loads of public money on sponsoring, doctoring and publicizing the survey results. Regrettably, these surveys cannot doctor the voters’ thoughts. That is why most of the exit poll results in the past proved false, phony and of no use.
I am much concerned about a non-political minded naïve person, who will definitely get confused by these misleading and concocted exit poll results. As a result he/she either will cast his vote at random or keep himself/herself at bay from this poll dirt. This will result in low turnout and subsequently a minority government.
Although Election commission is doing a commendable job, but it should ban these exit polls to help the voters keep their voting decisions secret and prevent parties from blowing up hard-earned public money.
